Due to the COVID-19 situation, the McGill Chem-E Car team was unable to physically attend the 2020 Eckhardt Northeast Student Regional Conference. However, two of our long-term members, Tinetendo Makata from our power source subteam, and Gregory Brock from our stopping mechanism subteam took part in the poster presentation aspect of the conference. The team persevered through the challenges of the pandemic, presented their poster remotely, and won second place!

For the second year in a row, the McGill Chem-E Car design team qualified for the Nationals competition! The 2019 competition took place in Orlando, Florida, and 42 teams attended in total. The McGill team sent a total of 9 team members to the competition this year. At the event, there were many opportunities for both professional networking and learning about available opportunities after graduation. The car successfully started during both runs, but was unfortunately disqualified both times. In the first run, the car stopped 1.5 seconds after the 2 minute time limit ended. In the second run, the car did not stop in time and drove out of bounds. Nevertheless, the team is working hard to perfect this year’s car so that they can compete at Nationals again for the third year in a row!

In March of 2019, 24 members of the McGill Chem-E Car team attended the Eckhardt Northeast Regional Conference at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The conference provided the team with both networking opportunities and the opportunity to compete against 13 other teams in the Chem-E Car and poster competitions. The McGill team won 1st place in both the Chem-E Car competition and the poster competition.

8 members of our team are traveling to Pittsburgh, PA, USA, where they will be competing in the Nationals Chem E-Car competition at AIChE’s Annual Student Conference on Friday the 26th. We will be competing against 40 student teams from around the world. Some of which include University of British Colombia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Texas A&M University at Qatar UC Berkeley, and University of Pittsburgh. We are looking forward to a smooth competition and hope to fulfill our goals this year while learning from our potential successes or failures. Wish us luck!!

The Chem-E Car Nationals team flew off to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 26th to join the AIChE Annual Student Conference and Chem-E Car competition alongside students and teams from all over the world, including contingents from Brazil, China, Greece, Qatar and India. Our fellow Canadians University of British Columbia were in attendance, as well as the 1st place team at our Regionals competition last spring – Clarkson University Team 2.

After a first run during which we experienced a fluke error, we came back in our second run to place a strong 9th out of the 38 competing teams, at 62.5 cm from the line. First place went to Georgia Institute of Technology with a distance of 1 cm. Our highly dedicated team put in what was surely a record breaking amount of practice with this car, and though we were hoping to do a little better, we are very proud to be 9th in the world, and 1st in Canada. Congratulations to Co-Captains Jenosan Annamalai and Rola Abdul-Ghani, as well as Christina Boghdady, Orhan Sari, Zijie Jin, Tony Ye and Thomas Philippon on your persistence and performance.

So many interesting Chem-E Car ideas were on show during the associated poster presentation and we were also able to benefit from chemical engineering talks and events at the student conference. On top of everything, the city of Pittsburgh was a beautiful backdrop for our weekend. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our success, including Daniel Pacheco who consulted by Skype call, our hero Frank Caporuscio, and our supporters in the Department of Chemical Engineering at McGill. We look forward to getting back to work on our next car to do it all over again.

In addition to attending certain conference talks and networking lunches, we competed against 19 teams from universities in the New England area in 2 chem e-car runs, a chemical engineering jeopardy tournament and a poster presentation. We are very pleased to say we came second place, after Clarkson University, qualifying us for the national chem e-car competition at AIChE’s annual Student Conference!

Who Are We?

It’s really simple; we are a group of university students from varied engineering disciplines who share our knowledge, team spirit and expertise to come up with a chemically powered car – The Chem-E Car!

We are always redesigning our car’s stopping mechanism and power source by incorporating electrochemistry, electronics, and reaction kinetics.
